11 Criminally Underrated Indian Movies You Must Watch Before 2021 Ends

What makes a movie underrated? Is it the box office numbers or the reviews of critics and fans that decide this?

With so many movies released this year, some in theaters and some on streaming services, you might have missed out on those underrated movies you need to watch before the year is out.

1. Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar

Starring Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor, this pursuit thriller not only presents a dark comedy but also presents a deeply rooted patriarchy and class division in our society in an effective way. And of course, the suspense will keep you going.

2. Ankahi to Ajeeb Daastaans

While Geeli Pucchi took all the limelight, Ankahi in Ajeeb Daastaans was equally noteworthy. The fourth tale in the anthology starring Shefali Shah and Manav Kaul is a tale of love and lies. Natasha is a married woman who falls in love with a hearing impaired photographer Kabir. The heartbreaking twist, at the end, makes this a perfectly crafted short story.

3. Nail polish

Another underrated 2021 film, Nail Polish, starring Arjun Rampal, Manav Kaul, Madhoo, Rajit Kapur and Anand Tiwari, Nail Polish follows the trial of a famous social activist accused of raping and murdering two migrant children. Not only that, he is believed to have killed other people.

4. Kaagaz

In another impressive performance by Pankaj Tripathi, this biopic is based on the life and struggle of Lal Bihari, a farmer from a small village in Amilo Mubarakpur, who has been declared dead on official papers.

5. Silence can you hear it

With Manoj Bajpayee, Prachi Desai and Arjun Mathur among others, the plot of the film revolves around the mysterious disappearance of a woman. The mysterious and thrilling movie will keep you hooked and guessing until the end.

6. Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi

Bauji is gone and his whole family has been under one roof for 13 days after a very long time. What happens in the midst of the grieving family? There are conflicts, politics, confrontations and so much more as they uncover themselves and discover their truth. The film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Vinay Pathak, Vikrant Massey, Konkona Sen Sharma, Vineet Kumar, Manoj Pahwa, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Supriya Pathak, Deepika Amin and Ninad Kama,

7. Milestone

Meel Patthar, also known as Milestone, is a story about one man’s struggle to stay relevant in an ecosystem that is trying to erase him. The film stars Suvinder Vicky, who plays the role of Ghalib in the film.

8. State of siege: attack on the temple

Starring Akshaye Khanna in the lead role, the film is based on the 2002 attack on Akshardham Temple. Inspired by real events, State of Siege: Temple Attack tells the heroic story of the NSG commandos who intervene to save innocent people when terrorists enter a temple in Gujarat and attack them.

9. Adhaar

Directed by Suman Ghosh and starring Vineet Kumar Singh, Saurabh Shukla, Raghubir Yadav, Ishtiyak Khan, Sanjay Mishra and Prithvi Hatte talks about a villager, who is the first to register in Aadhaar, but because of a premonition about his wife, he has to change her number. The film tackles the class division in India and critiques the system in the most hilarious way. If you liked Peepli Live, this one is a must for you.

10. 200 Halla Ho

Based on real events, 200 – Halla Ho is the story of 200 Dalit women who take law and order in hand to lynch a cold-blooded and brutal gangster to avenge the atrocities he inflicted on them for 15 long years. Veteran Bollywood actor, director and producer Amol Palekar has made a comeback with this film. Apart from him, the film also stars Barun Sobti, Rinku Rajguru and Sahil Khattar.

11. Day 100

Another underrated film of 2021, Manoj Bajpayee is in a race against time to save his family. The show also stars Neena Gupta, who plays a dark role. She goes so far as to avenge the death of her son. Besides Bajpayee and Gupta, the film also stars Sakshi Tanwar.
