Pushpa, Minnal Murali, 777 Charlie and more: South Indian movies to release in December

A host of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films are slated for theatrical release, while a couple will premiere on OTT platforms.

Production of several films had to be halted and many films had to forgo a theatrical release due to the first and second waves of the coronavirus pandemic. However, filmmakers and production houses have now announced dates for the highly anticipated theatrical releases – a couple will have a digital premiere on Over-the-top (OTT) platforms.

The films are lined up for release on Christmas and New Years. We have compiled a list of Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam films released in theaters and OTT platforms in December.

Telugu films

Skylab: With actors Nithya Menen, Satya Dev and Rahul Ramakrishna in the lead, comedy-drama Skylab takes place in 1979 Telangana. In the village of Bandalingampalli, residents live in fear that a space station, Skylab, will crash in the area. The film will be released on the big screen on December 4.

Lakshya: Billed as a sports drama, Dheerendra Santhossh director Jagarlapudi stars actors Naga Shaurya, Jagapathi Babu, Ketika Sharma and Sachin Khedekar. The film is set to hit theaters on December 10.

Good luck Sakhi: Another sports drama, Good luck Sakhi revolves around the life of Sakhi (Keerthy Suresh in the lead role), who supposedly brings bad luck to everyone and is considered an evil one. Written and directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, the film also stars actors Aadhi Pinisetty and Jagapathi Babu in key roles. The film is set to hit theaters on December 10.

Gamanam: Written and directed by debutante Sujana Rao, Gamanam iis an anthology film starring a cast of star actors including Shriya Saran, Siva Kandukuri, Priyanka Jawalkar, Suhas, Nithya Menen, Charuhasan and Ravi Prakash, among others. The film is set to hit theaters on December 10.

Pushpa: It is one of the most anticipated Telugu films of the year. The film has Rashmika Mandanna and Allu Arjun playing the lead roles, while Mollywood actor Fahadh Faasil was hired to try out the role of an antagonist in his Telugu debut. The first part of the film, Pushpa: The Ascension hits the big screen on December 17th.

Shyam Singha Roy: With actors Nani, Sai Pallavi and Krithi Shetty in the lead, the period drama Shyam Singha Roy would be based on the theme of reincarnation. Nani tries out the role of a writer and the film is set in Calcutta. The film is set to hit theaters on December 24, on Christmas Eve.

Ghana: With Varun Tej in the lead, with Saiee Manjrekar, Jagapathi Babu, Upendra, Suneil Shetty and Naveen Chandra in other important roles, Ghani is a sports drama. It is based on the life of a boxer and is set to hit the big screen on December 24.

malayalam movies

Bhimante Vazhi: With the actors Kunchacko Boban and Chinnu Chandni in the lead, Bhimante Vazhi released in theaters on December 3. The comedy-drama film is directed by Ashraf Hamza, who directed the critically acclaimed film Thamaasha.

Muddy: This action thriller, directed by novice filmmaker Pragabhal, is based on mud racing – an off-road motorsport. Muddy will feature Ridhaan Krishna, Anusha Suresh and Amit Sivadas Nair in the lead roles. Actors Harish Peradi, IM Vijayan, Ranji Panicker, Sunil Sukhada, Shobha Mohan and Guinness Manoj were also invited to play supporting roles in the film. Muddy hits theaters on December 10.

Minnal Murali: Billed as the first superhero film of Malayalam cinema, Minnal Murali with Tovino Thomas in the lead. Directed by Basil Joseph, the film will premiere on the Over-the-top (OTT) platform Netflix on December 24, before Christmas.

Thuramukham: Filmmaker Rajeev Ravi’s next Malayalam film Thuramukham stars actors Nivin Pauly, Poornima Indrajith, Indrajith Sukumaran, Arjun Ashokan, Nimisha Sajayan, Sudev Nair, Manikandan, R Achari and Darshana Rajendran in key roles. The film is based on a series of protests against the Chappa system, a practice followed in the port of Kochi in the 1950s. Thuramukham will be released in theaters on December 24.

tamil movies

Chithirai Sevvaanam: Based on the relationship between a father and his daughter, Chithirai Sevvaanam stars actors Samuthirakani and Pooja Kannan leading the way, while Rima Kallingal has been asked to play the role of a cop. This premiered on the Zee5 streaming platform on December 3.

Kuruthi Attam: Deemed to be an action thriller, the film stars Atharvaa and Priya Bhavani Shankar and is directed by Sri Ganesh, who previously directed 8 Thottakkal. Radha Ravi and Radhika Sarathkumar will be seen in supporting roles. It will be released on December 24.

Writer: With Samuthirakani from Kaala-fSoul and directed by Franklin Jacob, the film is set to hit theaters on December 24. It was funded by Pa Ranjith’s Neelam Productions, Golden Ratio Films, Little Red Car and Jetty Productions.

Frontier : Presented as a spy thriller, Frontier will star Arun Vijay and Regina Cassandra. It was reportedly shot in Chennai, Delhi and Agra. The film is slated for release in December after being postponed following the November floods, but the date has yet to be confirmed.

Kaathu Vaakula Render Kaadhal: TVijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara and Samantha star will apparently be released on Christmas Eve, although no official announcement has yet been made. A director of Vignesh Shivan, the film will also have Prabhu in a supporting role.

Mayon: Considered a mythological thriller starring Sibi Sathyaraj and Tanya Ravichandran, this will be director N Kishore’s first film. The music was written by Ilaiyaraaja. Mayon will apparently be released during Christmas and New Years week, although an official announcement has yet to be made.

Anandham Vilayadum Veedu: The famous actor-director Cheran and Gautham Karthik will star in this family drama which takes place around a village festival and is directed by Nanda Periyasamy. Daniel Balaji plays the antagonist and the main female role is played by Shivathmika Rajashekar. The film is scheduled for release in December.

Kannada movies

Madhagaja: The action thriller stars actors Srii Murali, Ashika Ranganath and Jagapathi Babu in the lead roles. The film hit the big screen on December 3.

777 Charlie: The film is based on the relationship between the main character Charlie and his dog. Rakshit Shetty is playing the lead role, while actors Sangeetha Sringeri and Raj B Shetty have also been invited to play other prominent characters. The film will hit theaters on December 31.

Avatara Purusha: The comedy-drama stars actors Sharan and Ashika Ranganath in the lead roles, while actors Sai Kumar, Sudha Rani, Bhavya Srinagar and Balaji Monohar, among others, in key roles. The film is set to hit theaters on December 10.
